The castle dates back to the beginning of the 13th century and was later reconstructed into a renaissance chateau, then reconstructed in baroque style following a fire in 1719. At the end of World War II it was raised to the ground. With the care of the Association, reconstruction was initiated according to the plans and under the command of architect O. Oplatka. The restored building was submitted in 1959 to be used as the district museum.

More detail about the object:

The Regional Museum is housed in Mikulov’s imposing chateau, rising high above the picturesque town, which straddles the road between Brno and Vienna. The original royal castle, guarding the border, was the main seat of two important families, the Liechtensteins and the Dietrichsteins. Thanks to the wide-ranging museum installation “Gallery of the Dietrichsteins”, the history of that famous family has returned to the castle interior, whose insides had been gutted by fire during the war. Such history is recalled in the 11 thousand rare books shelved in the castle library. Work in the vineyards and the production of wine, an inseparable part the region’s life, is given its expression in the unorthodox exhibition entitled “Traditional Viticulture in Moravia”. The castle cellars hide an artefact unique in Europe – a giant-sized wine barrel. Not only is its volume of 101,400 l rather impressive, the vessel itself is a superb work of art, with an ancient history dating back to 1643. If we want to visit some of the really early inhabitants of the local region, head to the exhibition “Romans and Germans in the Land below the Palava”, while the new exhibition “Wine Across the Centuries” also has an interactive element worth checking out.

The archaeological exhibition “Age of the Mammoth Hunters” in Dolní Věstonice focuses on showing us the findings from the Palaeolithic archaeological sites around Dolní Věstonice. It was here in 1925 that Dr Karel Absolon found one of the most famous female figurines in the world – the Venus of Dolní Věstonice.
